The Center for Sorghum Improvement (CSI) is hosting a virtual seminar given by Sandeep Marla, from the Department of Agronomy at Kansas State University, on Tuesday, July 22 at 11 AM CT. The title of the talk is, “Accelerating sorghum trait delivery with established public-private sector partnerships.” Dr. Marla’s research at Kansas State University focuses on accelerating trait discovery and delivery in sorghum by integrating genetic maps, molecular markers, and trait donor lines into comprehensive trait packages. His talk will focus on how his team is leveraging sorghum pangenome resources to map genetic resistance to chinch bug, a significant insect pest in central Kansas. He will demonstrate the development of high-throughput KASP markers that precisely tag the lgs1-1 allele conferring resistance to the parasitic weed Striga. The seminar will also highlight collaborative efforts under the STRAIT KIN initiative to transfer these genetic tools to breeders through genomic characterization and marker-assisted selection.
